🛟 How to Stay Afloat Effortlessly (Like a Competitive Swimmer)

In partnership with

If you feel like you’re fighting to stay up during your stroke, you’re not alone.
But the best swimmers don’t float better... they move smarter.

Floating effortlessly comes from body position, tension, and timing, not just buoyancy.

Here’s how elite swimmers make it look easy (and how you can, too).

Neutral Head = Balanced Body

The science:
Your head acts like a weight. Lift it = your hips drop. Drop it = your hips rise.
This changes your body’s angle and creates more drag.

The fix:

  • Keep your eyes down, neck relaxed

  • Aim for waterline between cap and goggles

  • Don’t force your head up to breathe, rotate instead

📌 A balanced head = a balanced body = easier float

Core Tension = Midline Control

The science:
Water wants to break your streamline. Without core tension, your spine bends and your hips sink.
This increases frontal resistance and kills momentum.

The fix:

  • Lightly engage abs + glutes

  • Imagine holding one straight line from head to toes

  • Don’t over-squeeze

📌 Your core is the bridge that holds your float together

Kick From the Hips, Not the Knees

The science:
Knee-driven kicks cause your body to bob vertically, breaking streamline and increasing drag.
Hip-driven kicks maintain a smooth body line, which keeps you up.

The fix:

  • Kick with small, fast beats

  • Feel the motion start from your core and hips

  • Ankles stay loose and feet flick water, not slap it

📌 The right kick doesn’t just move you forward, it keeps you afloat
